Snake Bites on the Rise in Israel: Tips for Staying Safe and Protecting Your Home

A man in his 60s was bitten by a viper-type snake while trying to wrestle with it after discovering it under the birdcage in his house. The incident happened one morning, and the man tried to protect himself by cutting off the snake’s head. Unfortunately, he was bitten on the left hand, and he received treatment with adrenaline, fluids, and serum to counteract the venom.

Recent weeks have seen an increase in snake bite cases in Israel, including a 14-year-old boy from Moshav Rintia and a boy from Beit Aryeh Shomron. According to Doral Erzuan, a senior MDA paramedic and snake catcher, the number of snake bites has been on the rise due to hot weather. Erzuan advised people to stay away from snakes, call a professional snake catcher if encountered, and seek immediate medical help if bitten.

To prevent snakes from entering houses and reducing the risk of bites, Erzuan recommended eliminating hiding places and food sources for them. He also suggested closing windows and installing nets to keep snakes out of buildings. By taking these precautions, individuals can ensure their safety while also protecting their surroundings.

The incident involving the man highlights the importance of seeking medical attention immediately after being bitten by a snake. Snake venom can cause serious complications such as heart rhythm disorders that could lead to death if not treated promptly.

It is essential for individuals to be aware of their surroundings when living near or in areas where snakes are known to reside. Taking proactive measures such as sealing up entry points into homes or avoiding walking through wooded areas at night can help prevent encounters with dangerous snakes.

In conclusion, while there are risks associated with living near or in areas where snakes reside, taking precautions can significantly reduce the risk of bites and other complications caused by venomous snakes.
