San Diego County Encourages Vaccination Before Summer Events Amid Mpox Resurgence

The number of local Mpox cases is on the rise, prompting San Diego County public health officials to urge the public to get vaccinated before attending large summer events. The county has reported seven Mpox cases in May and June, which matches the 10 new cases reported in Los Angeles.

In recent years, San Diego County typically records one or two new Mpox cases a month. However, out of the recent cases, four were among individuals who had not received the vaccine. Dr. Ankita Kadakia, County Interim Public Health Officer, emphasized the importance of receiving both doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine to protect against the Mpox virus, especially with the upcoming summer events that could contribute to its spread.

San Diego County experienced an Mpox outbreak in 2022 primarily affecting individuals in the LGBTQ+ community. However, Mpox can impact anyone as it can be transmitted through close physical contact. Symptoms of the infection usually include rashes or sores that can last two to four weeks and may cause intense pain, especially in sensitive areas. It is common for individuals with Mpox to experience flu-like symptoms before the appearance of rashes or sores.

The JYNNEOS vaccine is effective in protecting against Mpox and is available at county public health clinics. Individuals can also consult with their healthcare provider, visit myturn.ca.gov or call 211 for assistance in finding the vaccine. According to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), individuals who have received just one dose of JYNNEOS should get a second dose 28 days later for maximum protection against Mpox virus transmission during large gatherings this summer season.

Therefore, it’s important for everyone who plans to attend any large summer event in San Diego County to get vaccinated against MPX virus to prevent its spread during these events and protect themselves from getting infected by it.
