San Antonio’s Mental Health Outreach: S-A CORE Takes a Step Towards Improving Public Safety and Reducing Arrests

San Antonio’s Public Safety Committee met today to discuss updates on the city’s mental health outreach efforts. The initiative, known as S-A CORE, has been making significant progress in better serving individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. One positive outcome has been a decrease in arrests related to mental health issues.

During the presentation, a map was shown highlighting areas in the city with the highest frequency of mental health crisis calls. Since its start in January, S-A CORE has established three teams to cover the city more comprehensively. The program will be available 24/7 starting next month, providing timely responses to mental health crises and ensuring that individuals in need receive the support they require when facing a mental health emergency.

The expansion of S-A CORE is an important step towards improving public safety and providing better support for those in need. By having more teams available around the clock, individuals who are experiencing a mental health crisis can receive immediate assistance and prevent them from being arrested or ending up in jail. This initiative is helping San Antonio become a safer and more compassionate city for all residents.

The Public Safety Committee commended S-A CORE for its efforts and urged other cities to follow suit by investing in similar programs that prioritize mental health care over criminalization. With continued progress, S-A CORE will continue to make a positive impact on public safety and ensure that all residents have access to the resources they need during times of crisis.
