Rising Bacterial Pneumonia Cases Linked to Common Mycoplasma Strain in Israel

During the evening news on Kan-11 TV channel, journalist Katie Dor reported an increase in bacterial pneumonia cases among children and adults caused by a bacteria from the mycoplasma class. The rise in cases was first noted about two months ago, leading to hospitalizations in some instances. Hospitals including Shiba, Ichilov, Adasa, and Laniado reported an increase in bacterial pneumonia cases. In recent weeks, children have been admitted to the intensive care units of Tel Hashomer and Ichilov hospitals.

Katie Dor mentioned that this bacterium is common and has caused an increase in pneumonia cases in Europe during the winter. Despite the lack of accurate statistics due to Israeli medical institutions not being required to report every case, Dr. Ron Nirpaz, an infectious disease specialist at Adasa Hospital, noted that Israel is experiencing an epidemic similar to one in 2012. He predicts that the number of infections may continue to rise until May, with a possible decrease in June. The Ministry of Health responded to Kan-11 TV channel’s inquiry stating that the Center for Disease Control had not recorded a significant increase in pneumonia cases or other respiratory tract infections.
