Revolutionizing Connectivity: Ultra-Broadband for Remote Islands

The launch of the “Minor Islands Connection” Plan marks a significant milestone in the effort to bring ultra-fast connectivity to smaller islands across Italy, promoting digital services and economic development. The plan, which was presented by Elettra Tlc on the Teliri cable-laying ship, received support from institutional actors and the media.

The project aims to provide fair and fast access to the internet for island communities, while also investing in their economic growth. The undersecretary of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Innovation, Alessio Butti, emphasized the importance of this initiative in overcoming the digital divide and affirming technological innovation as a tool for growth.

Infratel Italia, as the implementer of the interventions envisaged by the Pnrr, is committed to providing adequate connectivity even to smaller islands through its partnership with public entities and TLC operators. The laying of submarine and terrestrial optical cables will enable modern digital services such as ultra-broadband, mobile connectivity, and 5G technology.

The plan will benefit 21 smaller islands in regions such as Lazio, Puglia, Sicily, Tuscany, and Sardinia. Over 60% of these islands are located in Sicily. Through this initiative, residents will have access to improved daily lives through modern digital services.
