Reducing Waste and Enhancing Sustainability: Insights from GroceryTech 2024

During the GroceryTech 2024 conference, Gina Acosta, Editor-in-Chief of the event, hosted a panel discussion with Ken Ninomiya of Sedano’s, Mark Sciortino of Vestcom, and Barry Clogan of Wynshop on the topic of how technology can help grocers improve their sustainability efforts. The conversation highlighted the importance of grocers adopting a clear sustainability strategy in response to consumer demand. According to Clogan, a study revealed that 73% of shoppers prefer to support grocers with a strong emphasis on sustainability. However, the reality is that a significant portion of food is wasted along the grocery supply chain before it reaches consumers, with a staggering 30% wastage rate.

Clogan stressed the need for grocers to shift their mindset from a short-term, reactive perspective to a more proactive, long-term approach in order to address the sustainability challenges within the industry. He mentioned that many grocers struggle with focusing on immediate concerns rather than investing in sustainable practices that have long-term benefits. This shift requires a change in how grocers approach their operations, supply chain management, and overall business strategy.

One key takeaway from the panel discussion was the urgency for grocers to prioritize sustainability efforts and integrate technological solutions to reduce waste, optimize resources, and enhance the overall shopping experience for consumers. By leveraging technology and embracing sustainability, grocers can not only meet consumer expectations but also contribute to a more environmentally conscious and efficient food system. The collaboration between industry experts at events like GroceryTech serves as a platform for exchanging ideas, exploring innovative solutions
