Avoid using supplements with red rice yeast

Red Rice Yeast Supplements Linked to Adverse Health Effects in Japan and Unapproved for Use in Israel

Last night, Mako Health issued a warning to the public advising against the use of nutritional supplements produced by Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Company in Japan. The company’s supplements contain red rice yeast as an ingredient and have been linked to the reported deaths and hospitalizations of five individuals who took them. The Ministry of Health in Japan had ordered a wholesale recall of these supplements just last week in response to the incident. An ongoing investigation is being conducted, but it is estimated that there is a connection between the consumption of nutritional supplements containing red rice yeast extract and the adverse health effects reported by consumers.

In Israel, the Ministry of Health has stated that red rice yeast extract is not approved for use in dietary supplements. No reports have been received in Israel of adverse effects from consuming these nutritional supplements purchased from foreign websites. Commercial import of such supplements requires prior approval from the National Food Service, and importers must provide evidence of a product’s safety and compliance with food legislation before approval is granted. The ministry encourages consumers to be cautious when purchasing dietary supplements online and to only consume those that have been approved by Israeli health authorities.
