Record-Breaking Traffic on Spanish Roads During Easter: Fuel Prices and Trip Estimates

Despite the unpredictable weather, there is a high volume of traffic on Spanish roads during Easter. It’s estimated that at least 16.5 million trips will take place during this holiday period. This is accompanied by a slight increase in gasoline and diesel prices.

At the start of the second phase of Operation Exit, gasoline prices stand at 1.63 euros per liter, representing a 1.24% increase from the previous week. Diesel prices have also risen slightly, reaching 1.5 euros per liter, which is 0.52% more than seven days ago. Despite these increases, both fuels remain much lower than the peak prices they reached in the summer of 2022.

Drivers who plan to fill up their tanks before their trips will find that gasoline prices are around 88.88 euros for a full tank, which is slightly cheaper than last Easter’s prices but still more expensive than in other European countries due to higher taxes and raw material costs in Spain compared to other EU nations.

Diesel, on the other hand, will cost around 84.26 euros for a full tank, which is about 17 cents more expensive than in 2023 but still less expensive than gasoline.

Prices may vary depending on the service station and time of day with ranges between 1.35 and 1.95 euros for gasoline and 1.16 and 1.99 euros for diesel.

Despite recent increases in fuel prices due to global shortages and supply chain disruptions caused by COVID-19 pandemic-related measures such as border closures and lockdowns, Spain still has cheaper prices compared to the eurozone average thanks to its lower tax burden and lower raw material costs.

The second phase of Operation Exit began with around 4% more traffic than last year, with approximately nine million trips taken by drivers seeking sunshine and relaxation during this holiday exodus starting Friday through Monday of next week.

In conclusion, despite fluctuating weather conditions during Easter holidays in Spain, there remains an abundant amount of traffic on Spanish roads with an estimated sixteen million trips being taken during this period while fuel price rise slightly compared to last year but remain much lower than peak prices reached in summer of 2022
