Rachael Franklin’s Gold Medal Victories Inspire Isle of Man’s Bid for 2029 Island Games

At the 2023 Island Games in Guernsey, Rachael Franklin made waves by winning two gold medals. The Manx bid to host the Island Games in 2029 is set to showcase a total of 14 sports if confirmed at the International Island Games Committee’s meeting in July. The Sports and Culture Minister, Daphne Caine, expressed excitement about the opportunity to showcase the island’s sporting prowess and culture. The Isle of Man has a rich history of hosting the games, first held on the island in 1985.

The Manx government has committed up to £2.4m to improve facilities for the games if the bid is successful. Ms. Caine highlighted the potential economic benefits of hosting the games, estimating a boost of £3.5m. The games could also serve as inspiration for a new generation of athletes. The inclusion of volleyball in the Manx programme was seen as a positive step towards promoting the growing sport on the island.
