Quantum Technology Surges in India: From Emerging Startups to Government Initiatives Promoting Women in STEM

Recently, India has made significant strides in the field of quantum technology, with over forty startups emerging in the past two years. This rapid growth highlights the growing potential of India in the global tech industry. Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, expressed his confidence in the country’s progress in this area.

In a recent meeting to discuss the 100-day action plan for the Department of Science & Technology, Dr. Singh emphasized the importance of the National Quantum Mission. He stated that India is now on par with leading nations in quantum technology and aims to establish itself as a global leader in this field, particularly in quantum communication.

One notable startup working in this sector is QuNu Labs, based in Bangalore and incubated by IIT Madras. The company recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Technology Development Board to develop security products using quantum technologies, highlighting India’s focus on innovation and research in cutting-edge technology.

Another positive development is the increasing number of women participating in extramural research and development activities due to government initiatives aimed at promoting women in STEM fields. Approximately 300 women scientists are reportedly receiving research grants under the ASPIRE scheme, showcasing India’s commitment to gender diversity in the tech industry.

India’s startup ecosystem continues to thrive, with more than 1 lakh startups today – an impressive increase from just over 500 startups back in 2014. With more than 110 unicorns (startups valued at over $1 billion), India has become a major player on the global stage for innovation and entrepreneurship, earning it a spot among top nations on The Global Innovation Index – moving from 81st place in 2015 to 40th place in 2023.
