Increase in Phishing Scams Hits Businesses in the Town of Royalton

Phishing Scams on the Rise in Royalton, NY: How to Protect Yourself and Your Business from Cyber Attacks

In recent years, the town of Royalton, NY has seen a concerning rise in phishing scams according to a study from the Better Business Bureau. The study showed that phishing scams hit a record high last year and are expected to continue to increase. This news was shared by Kat Schmieder from the BBB of Upstate New York, who stated that her organization received 9,288 scam reports in 2023, nearly double the amount from the previous year.

One local company, Performance Manufacturing Corporation, fell victim to a particularly devious phishing scam. The company received invoices for parts they never ordered, totaling $1,400. These invoices were sent via email and claimed that they had been ordered over the phone. However, Performance Manufacturing Corporation had no record of such conversations and lost money before realizing the scam. Since then, they have changed their invoice policy to prevent similar incidents from happening again in the future.

The increase in phishing scams can be attributed to advancements in AI technology that have made it easier for criminals to impersonate companies through various forms such as emails and text messages. Since 2021 alone, there have been over 23,000 reported phishing scams across different forms including vishing scams where fraudsters pretend to be law enforcement or government officials over the phone. Smishing involves text messages aimed at tricking recipients into clicking on links related to false orders or subscriptions while malware scams can manifest as pop-ups on computers designed to trick users into initiating fake tech support calls.

To protect themselves from falling victim to these insidious attacks, individuals should exercise caution when clicking on unfamiliar links or pop-ups and ignore any suspicious calls, texts or emails they receive. Awareness and vigilance are key in preventing financial losses and personal data breaches caused by phishing scams.

In conclusion, it is important for individuals and businesses alike to stay informed about new threats posed by cybercriminals so that they can take necessary precautions against falling victim to such attacks.
