SAN ANTONIO – Overall health inspectors lately suspended the license of a longtime Chinese restaurant on Broadway, just north of downtown.
Van’s Chinese Seafood Restaurant, positioned in the 3200 block of Broadway, was forced to close temporarily following a February inspection.
Their large issue was plumbing problems.
There was “no hot water,” and a cap was missing from the plumbing that brought on “a foul odor” when the water ran.
The inspector also wrote “small, reside pests” had been also noticed in the organization.
The inspector gave the restaurant a score of 79 but forced it to shut down till hot water could be restored, pest handle solutions had been hired, and all charges had been paid.
The restaurant was closed when KSAT Investigates reporter Tim Gerber stopped by this week.
Nonetheless, Than Hein Nguyen was inside and answered the door. He stated he was the chef, not the owner of the organization. He agreed to take Gerber behind the kitchen door to answer some inquiries.
Nguyen stated they had been only shut down for a day. He also stated they hired pest handle.
“I currently got it. I showed it to the inspector final month,” Nguyen stated. “Everything, I do it, but I do not want to devote far more revenue to repair it up, no.”
Even though the organization was permitted to reopen, he stated they no longer operate.
“I want to get out of right here. I do not want to do it and every little thing,” Nguyen stated. “I’m as well old.”
He stated they’re “not open,” but he nonetheless utilizes the restaurant “to cook for family members.”
Nguyen stated they’ve been struggling considering the fact that COVID hit. The organization also got hit with a string of unfavorable publicity final year when a state game warden seized far more than $25,000 worth of shark fins.
Soon after that, it took city wellness inspectors quite a few attempts to get inside for an inspection.
Records show inspectors attempted in June, October, November, and December final year and once again in January and February of this year prior to ultimately getting permitted inside.
Nguyen stated it was just for the reason that they hadn’t been open for organization.
When asked if they had been nonetheless opening the organization on some days for dinner, he stated that occasionally he opens for family members, and sometimes other shoppers come in.
So are they open or not? It appears it depends on the day.
Nguyen and two other people today related with the restaurant had been charged with quite a few misdemeanors associated to the possession of the shark fins.
KSAT Investigates reached out to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Division for an update on the status of that case. We’re waiting for a response.
A spokesperson for the agency stated the investigation is now in the hands of US Fish and Wildlife.
