In the first race of the FIM Women’s Circuit Racing World Championship at Misano on Saturday, Mia Rusthen’s accident caused a red flag. The Norwegian rider was in 12th place when she fell on entry to the final corner with just over 7 laps remaining. Despite initial reports suggesting that Rusthen had collided with another rider, the exact circumstances of her accident are still unclear.
Rusthen received medical treatment at the scene before being transported by helicopter to hospital for further assessment and treatment after sustaining unspecified ‘polytrauma’ injuries. A statement issued by the organizers provided an update on Rusthen’s condition as stable and recovering from a head injury with concussion.
Maria Herrera had been leading the race from Ana Carrasco at the time of Rusthen’s accident. The race was halted for a five-lap restart, but it was almost instantly halted again when Jessica Howden fell at Turn 2, sustaining a concussion and being transported to hospital as well. Lena Kemmer also had a slight scare when she tangled with a rival off the line but was unharmed.
The third start saw Herrera make history by holding off Carrasco for victory after trading places on the final lap. All riders in the championship use Yamaha R7 machines.
