Health Ministers gather in crucial year to discuss polio eradication efforts – Global Polio Eradication Initiative

New WHO Regional Director Leads Discussions on Eradicating Polio in Eastern Mediterranean Region

A recent virtual meeting brought together health ministers from the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region to discuss strategies for combating polio and working towards its eradication. The 10th meeting of the Regional Subcommittee on Polio Eradication and Outbreaks was the first convened by the new WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Dr. Hanan Balhky. During the meeting, Her Excellency Dr. Hanan Al-Kuwari, Minister of Public Health in Qatar and Subcommittee Co-chair, welcomed Dr. Balhky’s determination to end polio during her tenure.

Health ministers from across the region shared updates on outbreak responses and vaccination campaigns while discussing regional strategies to combat polio. The Subcommittee aims to strengthen efforts towards eradicating polio and bringing the world closer to achieving this goal.
