The New England Patriots are building out their coaching staff under head coach Jerod Mayo. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the team will be hiring Drew Wilkins as their outside linebackers coach, and former Patriots linebacker Dont’a Hightower will be taking on the role of inside linebackers coach.
Wilkins previously spent two years as an outside linebackers coach with the Giants, but was let go at the end of the regular season. He had also worked under former Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale with the Ravens before joining the Giants. However, he will not be following Martindale to the University of Michigan.
The Patriots have also made several other moves to fill key roles on their defensive side of the ball. DeMarcus Covington has been promoted to defensive coordinator, while safeties coach Brian Belichick and cornerbacks coach Mike Pelligrino have been retained. Additionally, Jerry Montgomery has been brought on as their defensive line coach, effectively filling all the key roles on that side of the ball.
