Vanderbilt University to Launch a New College Dedicated to Computing, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science

New College of Connected Computing at Vanderbilt University to Drive Innovation in AI, Data Science and Related Fields

Vanderbilt University is set to establish a new college focused on computer science, artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and related fields. The College of Connected Computing will collaborate with all of the university’s schools and colleges to advance breakthrough discoveries and enhance computing education through a “computing for all” approach.

The interdisciplinary college will be led by a new dean who will report to Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. C. Cybele Raver and School of Engineering Dean Dr. Krishnendu “Krish” Roy. The search for a dean is set to begin in late August.

Chancellor Dr. Daniel Diermeier has emphasized the importance of advanced computing, AI, and data science in shaping society. He believes that for Vanderbilt to continue fulfilling its mission, preparing students for their careers, and advancing research, the university must play a bigger role in studying, understanding, and applying these rapidly evolving disciplines.

Dr. Raver has highlighted how the new college will allow Vanderbilt to expand on its existing programs and provide students with exceptional educational opportunities. She noted that the growing global interest in AI aligns well with Vanderbilt’s expertise in the field.

Dr. Roy expressed that the establishment of the College of Connected Computing is significant for both the School of Engineering and the entire university, as computing is becoming increasingly intertwined with all disciplines. He believes that the future of education, research, and thinking will be greatly influenced by the knowledge and power of computing.

Overall, the creation of this interdisciplinary college represents a pivotal moment for Vanderbilt University, enabling the institution to make groundbreaking discoveries at the intersection of computing and other fields while effectively addressing society’s most pressing challenges with advanced computing solutions
