Students and Teachers from Northbrook Junior High School Receive Science Awards

NBJH Science Students Make a Splash at Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Fair, Earning 23 Awards

Northbrook Junior High’s Independent Science Research program had a successful showing at the Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Fair, bringing home 18 Gold and 5 Silver awards. Students at NBJH have the opportunity to participate in the science fair through a semester-long course where they can explore their interests in a research project using the scientific method. Teachers Lauren Johnson, Fred Yoon, and Amber Paull provide guidance and support to the students throughout the process.

During the school science fair, 7th and 8th-grade students present their research and findings to a panel of judges who evaluate their oral presentation, written work, and scientific method. Those who receive either a silver or gold award have the chance to advance to regional and state-level competitions. The students are encouraged to ask questions, work collaboratively, and develop key skills that will serve them well as they progress to high school.

In addition to the Gold and Silver awards, several students received special recognition for their exceptional projects. Some of the awards included the Exceptional Project in Category (EPIC) for Henry Gartz and Simon Pick, the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge Award for Maggie Griffith, Eric McCaughan, Simon Pick, and Gia Swinger, and the Illinois Soybean Association awards for various categories. The students at NBJH have shown their dedication to science and their ability to excel in a competitive environment.
