Legacy Funds Secured: Hungarian-Born Couple’s Generosity Supports Research Excellence and Early-Career Scientists in Memphis

Jolanda and Penczner, a Hungarian-born couple, were prominent members of the thriving community of Central European expats in Memphis. Among their close circle was Dr. Gabor Tigyi, also Hungarian, who served as the head of the Department of Physiology at UT Health Science Center. Physiology is a vital discipline that focuses on comprehending how organs and the body function.

The Penczners were so impressed by Tigyi’s work that they decided to entrust him with their estate. They established two legacy funds that are dedicated to preserving research excellence and supporting early-career researchers within the physiology department. Their generous bequests aim to assist young scientists, particularly those who may be non-native U.S. scholars in Memphis.

To ensure their legacy continues to have a positive impact for generations to come, the Penczners partnered with the Community Foundation. Their charitable contributions are safeguarded by the foundation, ensuring that their support for young scientists and research excellence in physiology will persist over time.
