Larry Bafundo has been named the new permanent executive director of the General Services Administration’s (GSA) funding vehicle, following calls from the White House and Congress to fund the Technology Modernization Fund (TMF). Prior to joining GSA in January, Bafundo oversaw modernization efforts at the Department of Labor and led a $2 billion initiative to upgrade unemployment insurance systems. He also worked at GSA’s 18F unit as a product manager for over two years, focusing on transformation efforts for crime data collection and reporting.
Deputy Administrator Katy Kale recognized Bafundo’s expertise and highlighted the importance of TMF in investing in IT modernization projects to enable the federal government to deliver simple, seamless, and secure services to the American public. This announcement follows calls from federal IT leaders and lawmakers to revitalize the TMF as it nears the end of its America Rescue Plan funding.
Bafundo’s promotion was first reported by NextGov, signaling a new chapter for TMF under his leadership. This development aligns with broader efforts to prioritize technology modernization across federal agencies in order to improve service delivery and efficiency for the American people.
