JMU Sports News: Mark Byington Departs for Vanderbilt

Key Turnover Shakes Up JMU Athletic Department as Men’s Basketball Coach Mark Byington Announces Departure to Vanderbilt

In a surprising turn of events, Mark Byington has announced his departure from JMU to join Vanderbilt. As the head men’s basketball coach at JMU, Byington had a record of 82-36 and led the Dukes to the NCAA Tournament in 2023-24. Despite securing a victory over Wisconsin in the first round, they were defeated by Duke in the second round of the tournament.

JMU is now faced with finding a replacement for Byington quickly as the transfer portal is currently open, and players are securing spots on teams for the upcoming season. With Jeff Bourne about to retire, this makes it crucial for JMU to make the final hiring decision.

The university also faces significant challenges as President Jonathan Alger announced his departure for this summer, and they brought in a new head football coach, Bob Chesney, in late 2023 following Curt Cignetti’s departure for Indiana. JMU has undergone notable key turnover within its athletic department at various levels.
