Israel Condemns UNSC for Granting Full Membership to Palestinians, Calls for Ambassadorial Protests

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly condemned the UN Security Council countries that voted in favor of granting full membership to the Palestinians. The ministry announced that it will summon ambassadors from France, Japan, South Korea, Malta, the Slovak Republic, and Ecuador to express a strong protest. Additionally, embassies of countries that supported the rejected Algerian proposal aimed at improving the status of Palestinians will also receive protests.

The message from the ministry emphasizes that any political gesture towards the Palestinians, especially recognizing a Palestinian state, is seen as supporting terrorism. Israel is adamant in its stance against establishing a terrorist state that poses a threat to its citizens. The Palestinians had requested acceptance into the UN as a “Palestinian state” already recognized by many countries globally.

During the recent Security Council vote, Israel used its veto power to block the Palestinian bid for full membership. The US, a staunch ally of Israel, used its veto power to block the bid as well. The US has consistently maintained that recognizing a Palestinian state through negotiations between Israel and Palestinians is appropriate rather than through international organizations such as the UN. Furthermore, American legislation requires cutting funding to the UN if Palestinian accession occurs outside of a bilateral agreement with Israel.
