Anchorage Chamber presentation spotlights mental health in the workplace

How to Create a Supportive Workplace for Mental Well-being: Insights from Anchorage Chamber Forum

In the recent “Make it Monday” forum hosted by the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, Jessica Kopischke, CEO and owner of Frontier Health and Wellness, spoke about mental wellbeing in the workplace. She emphasized that untreated mental health conditions are one of the leading causes of employee disability claims in the U.S., urging employers to prioritize their colleagues’ mental health to create a safe work environment.

During her presentation, Kopischke highlighted the need for employers to earn their team’s respect by showing that they care about their employees’ wellbeing. She stressed that it is essential to make employees feel safe and valued in the workplace. Different companies offer various resources for mental health treatment, and Kopischke encouraged individuals to educate themselves on these resources both at home and in the workplace. Understanding insurance plans, EAP programs, and available providers is crucial for accessing mental health support.

In Alaska, accessing mental health treatment can be challenging due to limited resources. Kopischke acknowledged the stigma surrounding mental health and how difficult it can be to seek help in a place like Alaska. However, she reassured individuals that it is okay not to be okay and that managing their mental health is necessary. By acknowledging their struggles and seeking help when needed, individuals can work towards better mental wellbeing.

Overall, Kopischke’s presentation emphasized the importance of prioritizing mental health in the workplace to support employees’ overall wellbeing. By promoting awareness and providing resources for those struggling with mental illnesses, employers can create a more supportive work environment that benefits everyone involved.
