CBS Sports Identifies Potential Issue for Chiefs in 2024

How Kansas City Chiefs’ Defense Became Their Key to Success Despite Trading Away L’Jarius Sneed

The Kansas City Chiefs won their second Super Bowl in a row last season, despite having one of their weaker teams during the Patrick Mahomes era. Their defense, however, showed significant improvement and was stronger than ever before in Mahomes’ time in Kansas City. Tough decisions had to be made in the offseason, and one of the hardest was trading away L’Jarius Sneed to Tennessee. This left the Chiefs’ cornerback unit weakened and caused concerns about their depth at that position.

According to Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports, the departure of Sneed has highlighted the cornerback depth as the team’s biggest issue. Without Sneed, the unit will have a different look this year. However, under the guidance of defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, it is expected that they will be ready to perform.

McDuffie’s rise as a lockdown starter and Williams’ emergence as a dependable depth player have been positive developments for the Chiefs. McDuffie has proven himself as a versatile starter in the secondary, while Williams has contributed to the team’s success in previous seasons, especially during their Super Bowl runs. As offseason speculation continues, it is clear that the cornerback group will have a different look this year. However, Spagnuilo has shown faith in his defensive expertise, which is reflected in his mantra on his defense’s t-shirts: “In Spags We Trust.”
