Gunman opens fire in Houston church during live mass broadcast

Houston’s Lakewood Church in the Crosshairs: A Look at the Unprecedented Shooting During a Service Led by Joel Osteen

A gunman opened fire in the background of a church service led by famous pastor Joel Osteen in Houston. The church, which has an average attendance of 45,000 people, was in the middle of a live service when the shooting occurred. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said police responded to an active shooting at a church near the Southwest Freeway shortly after 2 p.m. local time. The Spanish-language mass was about to begin when chaos broke out.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said authorities shot a possible suspect, but there is currently no information on the condition of that suspect or any other possible suspects. It is unclear if anyone else has been detained. Photos and videos show police cars and ambulances in front of the church, reports ABC13.

On social media, an announcement was made that there was an active shooting going on at Lakewood Church: “There is an active situation involving shots fired at Lakewood. Law enforcement is on the scene. That is all the information we have at this time.” Please pray for Lakewood and our community,” read the statement from AP news.

After the second shot, witnesses said everyone started running away. A witness from Colombia named Maria told NBC that she ran with her children and family while other witnesses reported hearing a burst of gunfire, perhaps dozens of shots around the same time multiple law enforcement and other authorities are on the scene at Lakewood Church responding to a potential active shooter
