Which versions of Android will Google Wallet no longer support with its latest update?

Google Enforces New Security Measures for Wallet App: Android 9 and Wear OS 2.x Required Starting June 10th

Google has recently announced that starting from June 10, users will need to have at least Android 9 on their phones and Wear OS 2.x on their smartwatches in order to use the Wallet app. This decision is being driven by the lack of security updates for versions prior to Android 9. Google is emphasizing the importance of pushing security updates to ensure the safety of features like tap-to-pay transactions.

Initially, when Google Wallet was launched in 2022, the minimum requirement was Android 5.0. However, the support page, which has not been updated yet, currently lists Android 7.0 as the minimum requirement. This means that users still using Android Nougat and Oreo will be directly impacted by the new policy.

According to statistics from Android Studio, as of October 2023, Android 9 Pie had achieved a cumulative distribution of 86.4%, indicating widespread adoption among users. Additionally, Wear OS 2, which was originally based on Android 8.0 Oreo, has been updated to version 9.0 Pie in order to align with new security standards. This update reflects Google’s trend of dropping support for Play services on older Android versions.
