Historically, research has focused on studying men or male animals, leading to a gap in understanding of how diseases and responses to treatment may vary between different sexes and genders. However, with new guidelines and mandates from major funders like the NIH, scientists are now considering sex and gender in their research, leading to new discoveries.
Despite this progress, the sociopolitical climate surrounding gender identity has become increasingly hostile and polarized. Science is sometimes being weaponized to push agendas, causing confusion and fear in the process. It is widely accepted by scientists that sex and gender exist beyond a simple binary, and this will not be up for debate in this podcast.
The field of sex and gender research is complex, with discussions needed around funding, inclusivity, and research practices. To address these issues and encourage clearer, less divisive thinking, three contributors will discuss how scientists can fill in years of neglected research and explore individual differences in a responsible and inclusive manner.
The special series of opinion pieces on sex and gender in science aims to move forward in a way that benefits as many people as possible.
