Sources say AAC is considering Tim Pernetti, sports executive, as next commissioner

From Controversy to Conference Commissioner: The Rise and Redemption of Tim Pernetti

Tim Pernetti, a seasoned college sports executive with a wealth of experience in the realm, has been appointed as the next commissioner of the American Athletic Conference (AAC). Pernetti currently serves as the president of IMG Academy and previously held positions as athletic director at Rutgers and Chief Business Officer for New York City FC in the MLS.

The AAC is undergoing significant changes with recent additions including Rice, UTSA, North Texas, FAU, UAB, and Charlotte. He will be replacing Mike Aresco who recently retired after being the league’s only commissioner for 11 years. The league is currently under contract with ESPN for its television coverage until 2031-32.

Pernetti’s early career began with CSTV where he was the first hire before moving on to ABC Sports and ABC Enhanced TV from 1994 to 2003. Despite facing challenges during his time at Rutgers where he resigned following the exposure of abusive behavior by the men’s basketball coach, Pernetti has rebounded and established himself as a respected executive in the industry.

With his background in television, college sports and on-campus experience, Pernetti appears to possess the ideal mix of qualifications for the commissioner role. As trends shift towards non-traditional candidates such as Brett Yormark of Big 12 and Jim Phillips of ACC, Pernetti’s appointment aligns with this pattern. His diverse background positions him well to lead the AAC through its next phase of growth and development.
