French Elections Set Stage for Political Showdown Between Macron and Far-Right as National Assembly to be Dissolved

On Sunday, the French will head to the polls to elect new members to the National Assembly. This decision was made by President Emmanuel Macron following the European elections, where his party, Renaissance, came in second place behind the far-right National Alliance led by Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella. The National Alliance received 31% of the vote while Renaissance only managed 15%.

Macron’s decision to dissolve the National Assembly may have been motivated by a desire to take action against the rise of the far right. By calling early elections, Macron positioned himself as a leader challenging this movement and gauging its actual support. If he had not acted, he may have been forced to respond to calls for new elections from the National Alliance.

There are two theories about Macron’s motives. One is that he does not believe the National Alliance will win again in the National Assembly elections. The other theory is that Macron wants to show what happens when extremists come into power and how their policies can harm France and its relationship with Europe.

If Macron’s party were to win the election, they could form a cohabitation government with him as president. However, this would make governing difficult as he needs support from parliament for many actions. Alternatively, if Macron loses and Marine Le Pen becomes prime minister, it could lead to tensions between them and potentially even a breakup of their ruling coalition or even an early presidential election in 2022.

The beloved French national football team has also taken a stand on this issue by encouraging young people to vote and oppose extremism through social media campaigns and interviews with players like Kylian Mbappé and Marcus Thuram. The outcome of this election will have significant implications for France’s future direction and its relationship with Europe.

In conclusion, Sunday’s election marks a crucial moment in French politics as it will determine whether Emmanuel Macron will maintain his grip on power or face opposition from far-right groups led by Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella. The outcome of this election will set the stage for future political developments in France and Europe for years to come.
