Science teacher from Hillsborough County named as a finalist for Florida Teacher of the Year

Florida Teacher of the Year Finalist: Clayton Nylund’s Innovative Approach to Science Education

In 2011, Clayton Nylund joined the Hillsborough County School District as a dedicated science teacher at Blake High School. Since then, he has been teaching physics and engineering with great passion and dedication, making these courses highly sought-after by students. Nylund’s ability to create a learning environment where students are eager to participate and learn has earned him the title of Hillsborough County Teacher of the Year in February.

In 2019, Nylund introduced a Principles of Technology course that has been incredibly successful. This hands-on approach has allowed students to research, design, build, test, and compete with their projects while learning about circuits, coding, programming, and robotics. The innovative curriculum has been expanded to six other high schools with nearly 1,000 students participating.

Officials from the Florida Department of Education surprised Nylund with the exciting news that he was one of the five finalists for Florida Teacher of the Year during one of his classes. Superintendent Van Ayres praised Nylund for his ability to make physics and engineering courses highly sought-after by students while creating a learning environment where students are eager to participate and learn.

Being named one of the top teachers in Florida is an incredible honor for Nylund. He emphasizes the importance of students bringing only themselves and a focused mind to his class. His dedication to both his subject matter and his students has made him a standout educator in the district and now a finalist for the state’s top teaching award. The winner of the Florida Teacher of the Year award will be announced in Orlando on July 25th, with Nylund and four other deserving finalists eagerly awaiting the results.
