A major event occurred in the port of Joya Tauro two weeks ago, when six containers from China arrived via two ships. The containers were found to contain Wing Long II model unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which are 10 meters long, have a wingspan of about 20 meters, and weigh approximately 3 tons each. Despite efforts to conceal their true nature by labeling them as wind turbine parts and including two operating stations in the containers, Italian customs officials uncovered the deception.
The intended destination for these drones was Khalifa Haftar’s forces in Libya, as part of an attempt to circumvent a UN embargo. However, American intelligence that tipped off Italian authorities helped expose this smuggling operation. This incident is not unique, as similar events have taken place in other countries like Canada.
The Wing Long II UAVs are used by advanced militaries such as those of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The close relationship between Abu Dhabi and China has been highlighted in recent meetings between military officials from both countries. These developments suggest a shift in alliances and interests in the global military landscape.
