Exploring the Cosmos: Latin America’s Pioneering Role in Astronomy

Latin America is a hotspot for astronomical research and discovery, boasting centuries-old solar observatories in Mexico and cutting-edge radio telescopes in the Andes. The region has been at the forefront of space science for decades, with many exciting discoveries to its name.

In collaboration with Science Friday and El País: América Futura, a 7-week newsletter focusing on astronomy and space science from Latin America is set to launch on May 22nd. Each week, subscribers will receive a story on topics such as how satellites are monitoring deforestation in the Amazon, the future of astronomy in Puerto Rico following the collapse of the Arecibo telescope, and new research conducted by Latin American women.

The newsletter will feature content in both English and Spanish, making it accessible to a wider audience. Santiago Flórez, Science Friday’s community manager, will be the writer behind the newsletter. With a background in teaching, anthropology, and journalism, Santiago is passionate about sharing stories from the world of science with the public.
