Empowering Young STEM Leaders: Westminster High School’s Chief Science Officers Share Their Experiences with Orange County Department of Education Deputy Superintendent Dr. Ramon Miramontes

Orange County Department of Education Deputy Superintendent Dr. Ramon Miramontes visited Westminster High School to learn about the Chief Science Officers program as part of the “College and Career Ready” series. This school is the first in California to participate in this initiative, which aims to empower students to serve as STEM ambassadors on their campuses and in their communities.

Dr. Miramontes met with three students during his visit – Tina, a junior, as well as sophomores Sophia and Kailani. They shared their experiences as Chief Science Officers (CSOs), student leaders who are elected by their peers to lead initiatives that promote STEM education. These young people develop action plans to increase awareness and engagement in STEM subjects among their classmates and community members.

The CSOs also discussed the positive impact of their roles in advancing STEM education, including an exciting opportunity they had to travel to Florida for a conference where they collaborated with other Chief Science Officers from different parts of the country.

To learn more about the Chief Science Officers program and hear from Westminster High School students about their experiences, watch the video above. This initiative is a great way to inspire young people to pursue careers in STEM fields and become leaders in their communities.
