Promoting Data Science Opportunities for Women in Blacksburg

Empowering Women in Data Science: Virginia Tech Hosts Networking Mixer and Conference

On Monday, Virginia Tech hosted a networking mixer for individuals interested in data science, with the goal of providing women with opportunities to connect with professionals in the field and hear from successful women who have advanced their careers in data science. The event was part of an initiative to increase participation and encourage more women to pursue careers in this rapidly growing field.

According to the US Census Bureau, demand for data scientists is expected to rise by 35 percent by 2032. To help meet this demand, Virginia Tech is taking steps to promote diversity and inclusion in the field of data science. One such effort is the half-day conference that will take place on Tuesday, featuring speakers from the industry who will discuss their work and share insights on how to increase diversity in data science.

The conference aims to raise awareness about the importance of promoting diversity and inclusion in this field, which has historically been dominated by men. Angie Patterson, a Professor of Practice in Virginia Tech’s Department of Statistics, emphasized the need for young women to have role models in the field and discussed the theme of the event: gaining visibility as a woman in data science. By providing opportunities for women to network with professionals and learn from successful female data scientists, Virginia Tech hopes to inspire more young women to pursue careers in this exciting field.
