Statewide availability of a mental health program for police officers

Empowering Texas Law Enforcement Officers: Peer Support and Mental Health Resources Proven Effective in Reducing Suicide Rates”.

The importance of mental health resources for law enforcement officers cannot be overstated. To access support, individuals can call 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline or text HOME to 741741 to connect to the Crisis Text Line.

In Texas, police chiefs have been calling for programs that address mental health issues such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder in order to save officers’ lives. In 2022, data from the Blue Chip Program revealed that Texas had the highest number of law enforcement officer suicides at 16. The Blue Chip Program aims to reduce these numbers by providing officers with avenues to process traumatic events and connect with their peers.

One such program was introduced by the Arlington Police Department following a shooting at an Allen outlet mall. This initiative, in collaboration with the Blue Chip Program, sets Texas apart as the only state offering law enforcement officers a peer support network and the opportunity to access free mental health services anonymously. With these resources at their disposal, officers are better equipped to deal with the stresses of their job and prevent tragedies like suicide from occurring.
