Engineers from Tesla are Allegedly Leaving to Join Elon Musk’s AI Startup

Elon Musk’s AI Startup xAI Attracts Tesla Engineers Amidst Competition for AI Talent

Tesla engineers have been leaving the electric car company to join Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI. Ethan Knight, a machine-learning scientist who was previously working on computer vision for Tesla’s self-driving technology, is one of the engineers who made the move. Musk initially accused OpenAI of aggressively recruiting Tesla engineers with high compensation offers, which led him to raise salaries for members of Tesla’s AI engineering team in response.

While the tech industry is facing competition for AI talent, Musk has been vocal about wanting greater control over Tesla’s AI strategy. In a post on X in January, Musk expressed discomfort with expanding Tesla’s AI and robotics capabilities without controlling a quarter of the voting bloc. These comments were seen as an ultimatum by some investors, with some describing them as bizarre and amounting to blackmail.

Musk recently launched xAI’s chatbot named Grok to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The three former Tesla engineers who joined xAI have reportedly contributed significantly to the development of Grok. The chatbot is designed to understand natural language and respond accordingly, making it a potential game-changer in the field of AI chatbots.

Overall, Musk’s efforts to gain more control over Tesla’s AI strategy have raised eyebrows and sparked debate within the industry. While some see it as necessary for long-term success, others worry that it could stifle innovation and lead to missed opportunities for collaboration between companies in the sector.
