Dreaming of Shenron: How Dragon Ball Z Theme Park is Driving Saudi Arabia’s Growing Interest in Video Games and Anime

At the 2019 Gamescom gaming trade fair in Cologne, Germany, visitors had the opportunity to try out the latest version of Dragon Ball Z Kakarot. The popular video game franchise drew in crowds eager to experience the newest features and gameplay elements.

Meanwhile, in Saudi Arabia, plans are in place for the development of the first-ever Dragon Ball Z theme park. This 5.3 million square foot entertainment venue is part of the kingdom’s Qiddiya project, a massive undertaking aimed at enhancing tourism and diversifying the economy.

The Dragon Ball Z theme park will consist of seven different areas inspired by locations from the original anime series. With over 30 themed rides, including five world-first attractions, visitors can immerse themselves in the world of Dragon Ball Z like never before. One standout ride, the Shenron roller coaster, will soar to heights of 230 feet, providing an exhilarating experience for thrill-seekers.

Furthermore, Toei Animation and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s foundation have collaborated to create anime movies that will captivate audiences worldwide. The kingdom’s investment in video games and anime reflects a growing interest in these forms of entertainment.

Qiddiya City is a planned multibillion-dollar project that aims to offer a wide range of attractions in Riyadh. With ambitions to host 600,000 residents and millions of visitors annually, it is poised to transform Saudi Arabia into a leading destination for leisure and entertainment as part of Vision 2030’s ambitious initiative to diversify the economy and boost tourism.
