Iona Prep Students Win Regeneron Science Fair Division Awards

Dedication and Innovation: Two Exceptional High School Students Achieve Top Honors at Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair

Two exceptional high school students from Iona Prep recently received division awards at the 2024 Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair. Aydan Gerber, a senior, and Mateo Del Rio Lanse, a junior, showcased their impressive work at the competition, which took place on March 16th at Somers High School. The event attracted over 700 students from Westchester, Putnam, and Sullivan Counties.

Gerber’s project focused on developing an algorithm using Python to analyze keyword frequency and identify significant topics of discussion under the #sustainability hashtag on Twitter. His results were published by Cambridge University Press in February. Meanwhile, Del Rio Lanse worked on improving machine-learning rates by developing three convolutional neural networks that can screen for tumors in brain scans.

The Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair aims to promote hands-on science and research among high school students in Westchester, Putnam, and Sullivan Counties. By providing a platform for these students to showcase their work, the fair helps encourage innovation and academic excellence. The top 20 projects from the competition will advance to the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair, where students will have the opportunity to present their research on a global stage.

In conclusion, Gerber and Del Rio Lanse’s accomplishments highlight the importance of scientific research in shaping our future. Their dedication to excel in their respective fields serves as an inspiration for many aspiring scientists out there. The Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair plays a vital role in fostering this passion for science and engineering among young minds.
