Dangers of Sticky Toppings: A Young Woman’s Near-Death Experience with Tapioca Pearls in Milk Tea Illustrates the Importance of Choking Prevention Techniques

Recently, a 20-year-old girl choked on tapioca pearls after drinking milk tea and was rushed to Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi. The patient arrived at the hospital with severe coughing, difficulty breathing, and blue lips. An endoscopy revealed pearl beads lodged in the right bronchus. This incident highlights the dangers of consuming drinks with sticky toppings like tapioca pearls, jelly, coconut jelly, and others.

Dr. Nguyen Van Ngan from Tam Anh General Hospital warns that these toppings can increase the risk of choking on foreign objects in the airways. He advises people to use a spoon instead of a large straw when consuming drinks with sticky toppings or other foods that have a risk of choking. Young children are especially at risk due to their lack of knowledge and slower reflexes.

Choking on foreign objects can have serious consequences, including respiratory failure and death if not treated promptly. The Heimlich maneuver is a common first aid technique used for adults and children over the age of two who are choking on foreign objects. Children under two years old require a different approach, such as patting their back and chest compressions. It’s important to act quickly and seek medical attention if the object cannot be expelled despite first aid efforts.

To prevent choking incidents caused by foreign objects, it’s crucial to take precautions while eating and supervise children closely. By being vigilant and aware of potential hazards, we can help ensure that our loved ones stay safe and healthy.

In conclusion, while pearls and jelly may seem like harmless treats, they can pose significant risks when consumed improperly. By taking steps to prevent choking incidents caused by foreign objects, we can help ensure that everyone enjoys these treats safely and without fear of harm.
