Donald Danforth Plant Science Center President and CEO Jim Carrington, PhD, has announced his plans to step down on July 1, 2025. After leading the center for 13 years, Dr. Carrington expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as President and acknowledged the contributions of the staff, partners, and supporters who have helped the organization succeed. He emphasized the importance of planning for a smooth transition and highlighted the benefits that a new leader will bring in terms of fresh perspectives, ideas, and talents.

Penny Pennington, managing partner at Edward Jones and chair of the Danforth Center Board of Directors, will lead the search for a new President. The search process will be inclusive, involving members of the Danforth Center community as well as stakeholders in St. Louis and beyond. Pennington praised Dr. Carrington’s leadership and impact on the organization during his time as President, expressing her gratitude for his guidance as they approach this milestone.

During his tenure as President, Dr. Carrington oversaw significant growth and development at the Danforth Center. This includes doubling the staff size, expanding scientific research initiatives, establishing new facilities such as the William H. Danforth building and Field Research Site. He also prioritized moving research outcomes into marketplaces through spin-out company formation and development of 39North innovation district.

Looking ahead to his retirement, Dr. Carrington is committed to ensuring a smooth transition for his successor and the Danforth Center community. He remains focused on creating opportunities for future leaders and fostering a culture of innovation and growth within the organization.
