Creating a Safer TikTok for Teens: The Global Youth Council’s Priority to Enhance Well-being and Inclusion

TikTok is committed to enhancing the safety of teenagers on its platform through a new program called the Global Youth Council. The council brings together 15 users aged between 15 and 18 from various countries to provide insights on well-being and inclusion on the platform. The social network, owned by ByteDance, already offers tools to protect minor users and ensure their safety, such as the Family Synchronization feature.

The goal of TikTok is to create a safe space where young people can freely express themselves while being protected from online threats. The company announced plans to establish a Global Youth Council back in 2023, with the aim of listening to the experiences of young users. The council now consists of 15 teenagers from different countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Indonesia, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, and Morocco, representing various communities and defending young creators’ interests.

The Youth Council collaborates with Praesidio Safeguarding, an online security agency that provides expertise in security and digital well-being. During their second meeting held recently, members outlined their priorities for the year, focusing on the well-being and inclusion of young people. They discussed redesigning the TikTok Youth Portal and gaining more insight into complaints and account blocking processes.

TikTok has conducted a global study in partnership with ConnectSafely involving over 12,000 adolescents and their guardians demonstrating their commitment towards ensuring safety measures are implemented effectively. The company emphasizes the importance of external perspectives in enhancing safety measures on TikTok and continues to implement innovations focused on security such as new media literacy campaigns aimed at countering misinformation and AI-generated content in the United States.

With this initiative in place, TikTok aims to create a safe environment for young people while also promoting inclusivity on its platform.
