Project proposal to declare agricultural emergency in response to severe corn pest outbreak.

Corn Leafhopper Crisis: National Deputies Introduce Emergency Measures to Save Crop Production in Argentina

In recent years, the corn leafhopper, an insect vector of the Spiroplasma kunkeli bacteria, has caused significant damage to cereal crops in several provinces across Argentina. The pest is deadly and has spread rapidly to provinces like Córdoba, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, and La Pampa. This has led to a decline in corn production and raised concerns about food security.

To address this emergency situation, National deputies Luis Picat and Martin Ardohain have introduced a project to declare an agricultural emergency in several provinces affected by the corn leafhopper. The project involves three stages: tax benefits, zoning using satellite images, and exempting or postponing rural real estate tax based on each province’s agreement.

The agricultural emergency is affecting provinces such as Santiago del Estero, Chaco, Catamarca, Tucumán, Salta, Córdoba, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos
