Science Museum sponsor urges ‘armchair activists’ to step back

Climate Change Criticism: Fossil Free Science Museum Coalition Protests at Museum’s Partnership with Fossil Fuel Companies

Greta Thunberg led a protest at the Science Museum last month, where the group unfurled a banner with the message: “2024, more droughts and floods – fuelled by Science Museum oil and gas sponsors”. The Fossil Free Science Museum coalition, consisting of Extinction Rebellion and Scientists for Extinction Rebellion, expressed concerns about the museum’s reputation being tarnished by its oil and gas sponsors.

Despite controversy, Sir Ian Blatchford, director and chief executive of the Science Museum Group, emphasized the importance of engaging audiences with the science of climate change. He described it as the defining challenge of our time. The museum’s new gallery was made possible by sponsorship from Adani Green Energy. However, Blatchford defended the museum’s decision to accept sponsorship, stating that trustees believe in maintaining relationships with companies like Adani Green Energy to promote efforts in making the global economy less carbon intensive.

The Fossil Free Science Museum coalition believes that accepting oil and gas funding undermines the museum’s mission to educate visitors on climate change and its impacts. They argue that these industries are responsible for driving climate change through their greenhouse gas emissions. However, Blatchford maintains that promoting such partnerships is crucial in addressing climate change on a global scale. The museum remains committed to educating visitors on this critical issue while also acknowledging its role in contributing to it through its partnerships with fossil fuel companies.
