Winners Announced for Science & Engineering Fair by Service Authority

Celebrating Youth and Innovation: Prince William County Service Authority Honors Students for Exceptional Water Quality Projects

Prince William County Service Authority recently honored 11 middle and high school students from Prince William County, Manassas, and Manassas Park for their exceptional entries in the 2024 Prince William-Manassas Regional Science & Engineering Fair. Partnering with Prince William County Schools, the Service Authority annually reviews water- and wastewater-related submissions in the Science & Engineering Fair, recognizing outstanding projects with Service Authority Organizational Awards. During the May 9 Service Authority Board of Directors meeting, this year’s student winners were presented with cash prizes and commendations.

In the Middle Division, Lily Lu from Ronald Reagan Middle School secured First Place with her project titled “The Effect of Different Types of Bivalve Shell Filtration on Stream Water Quality.” Her research focused on the effectiveness of bivalve shell filtration, specifically examining oysters, clams, and mussels, in improving stream water quality. In the Senior Division, Dylan Borek, Josh Rizer, and Izidor Yatsevich from The Governor’s School at Innovation Park claimed First Place with their project exploring “The Effects of Ocean Acidification and Ultraviolet Radiation on Spirulina major.”

Michelle Miranda, the Service Authority’s Community Outreach Supervisor, and Jamaine Logan, Education & Outreach Assistant praised the talent and dedication of the young scientists. They emphasized that it is important to nurture their passion for water quality treatment and environmental stewardship.

The complete list of winners for the Middle Division includes First Place: Lily Lu from Ronald Reagan Middle School; Second Place: Aysha Jafar & Salma Jafar from Ronald Reagan Middle School; Third Place: Erin Jansen from The Nokesville School; General Manager’s Awards: Zoey Davis from Marsteller Middle School. In the Senior Division, the winners are First Place: Dylan Borek, Josh Rizer & Izidor Yatsevich from The Governor’s School at Innovation Park; Second Place: Andrew Funk & Sofia Wojcik from The Governor’s School at Innovation Park; Third Place: Jocelyn Ellis from Osbourn Park High School.
