Andrew Mangiapane and Team Canada have advanced to the semifinals of the IIHF World Championship after defeating Slovakia 6-3. Despite an upper-body injury suffered in Slovakia’s final group stage game, Martin Pospisil was unable to play.
This marks the ninth consecutive tournament in which Canada has made it to the final four. Five different Canadian players scored goals in the victory, as they held off a late rally from Slovakia.
Jared McCann got Canada off to a quick start, scoring just over three minutes into the game. Pierre-Luc Dubois added another goal before the end of the first period, leaving Slovakia struggling to keep up.
Nick Paul scored a third goal for Canada in the second period, taking their lead to 3-1. Brandon Tanev added another goal in the third period, leaving Slovakia scrambling to keep up. However, they managed two more goals to keep it close until Paul sealed Canada’s victory with an empty-net goal on his last shot of the game.
Goalie Jordan Binnington made 18 saves for Canada, while Samuel Hlavaj stopped 37 shots for Slovakia in the losing effort. Despite their success so far, Canada knows they still have work to do if they want to win this championship.
