On April 25, Can Tho Central General Hospital successfully performed the first kidney transplant in the Southwest region after four years of preparation. The hospital announced its success on May 9 once the patient’s health had stabilized. The recipient of the kidney transplant is a 34-year-old male teacher from Ben Tre who had been suffering from chronic kidney failure for six years and undergoing medical treatment.
The kidney donor is the patient’s brother. Two years ago, the patient was diagnosed with end-stage chronic kidney failure and was prescribed hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Earlier this year, he registered on the kidney transplant waiting list at Can Tho hospital, which had been recognized by the Ministry of Health as qualified to perform kidney transplants from living donors and brain-dead donors.
After five hours of surgery, the patient’s new kidney began functioning as evidenced by the appearance of urine after the ureter connection. The patient’s health has since stabilized, and his kidney function has almost returned to normal. He is expected to be discharged from the hospital on May 9, with his donor also recovering well. The transplant procedure cost approximately 270 million VND and was sponsored by donors.
Dr. Nguyen Phuoc Loc, Head of the Department of Nephrology and Urology, highlighted the careful preparation and synchronized coordination that led to the successful transplant. Can Tho Central General Hospital is now the 26th kidney transplant center in Vietnam, marking a significant milestone in its professional development and for the Southwest region as a whole.
The hospital has trained medical staff across multiple disciplines to handle all aspects of transplant surgery, from surgery to post-transplant care. The goal is to perform one kidney transplant each month and establish a kidney donation and transplant fund for the community. As of now, there are three more pairs of cases registered for
