Campus Arrests for Anti-War Protests: The Escalating Conflict Within American Universities

On the campus of the University of Wisconsin, over 34 students were arrested by police in response to an anti-war movement related to the conflict in Gaza. Early Monday morning, officers arrived at the university to remove a camp set up by students in one of the institution’s parks. Videos shared on social media showed students confronting police officers, who were equipped with riot shields. Some students and teachers were thrown to the ground during the confrontation.

The arrests came despite the university’s prohibition on setting up camps on campus. Hundreds of students had gathered since Monday in protest, calling for the severing of ties with the Israeli government due to the conflict in Gaza. Similar demonstrations have been taking place at universities across the United States, including UCLA, where police presence has been increased in response to clashes between pro-Israel and anti-war protesters.

In New York, 282 individuals were arrested during pro-Palestinian protests at universities, with Mayor Bill de Blasio condemning their actions as anti-Semitic and violent. Politicians from both major parties have criticized these protests, with President Joe Biden denouncing slogans and strategies used by students such as occupying university buildings. The protests have led to arrests at various universities and tensions have escalated at some campuses like Columbia in New York.
