Brookings students participate in National Science Bowl competition

Brookings High School Science Bowl Team Wins Regional Title and Heads to Nationals in Washington, D.C.

Five students from Brookings High School won the South Dakota Regional Science Bowl in February, earning a trip to Washington, D.C. to compete at the national level sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. Representing Brookings High School were seniors Vanessa An, Nancy Yang, Cole Knutzen, and Sampada Nepal, along with sophomore Mallory Wells. The team was undefeated at the regional level and excelled in the Design Team Challenge during their visit to Washington D.C., where they spent a day touring the Udvar-Hazy National Air and Space Museum and attending presentations by National Laboratory personnel in the field of artificial intelligence.

The next day, they toured museums on the National Mall in D.C., including the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History and Culture and the National Gallery of Art. During their time at the national tournament, Brookings High School placed fifth in their bracket just missing out on advancing to the double elimination tournament by one spot after final rounds on Monday, they traveled back home with great memories from their experience at The National Science Bowl
