Minnesota House to Debate Sports Betting Legislation

Breaking the Deadlock: Will Minnesota Finally Legalize Sports Betting?

A bipartisan group of lawmakers in Minnesota has been working to find a compromise on sports betting, which was once thought to be dead. Republican Rep. Pat Garofalo, who is the bill’s Senate sponsor, has been pushing for legalization of sports betting in the state for years.

Garofalo likened the current situation to a “Hail Mary play in the endzone,” with legislators who oppose the bill trying to knock it down. The fight over the bill ultimately comes down to who will benefit financially from sports gambling in Minnesota. With only limited time left before the legislative session adjourns on Monday, lawmakers must come to a decision soon.

The sports betting industry has seen record revenue of $11 billion in 2023, with 38 states already legalizing some form of sports betting since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the federal ban. Minnesota is one of few states that have not yet legalized any form of sports betting, despite its neighboring states having already done so.
