Health and Human Services designates two new Qualified Health Information Networks

Breaking News: Seven Qualified Health Information Networks Designated for Nationwide Health Information Exchange under New Rules

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology at the Department of Health and Human Services has designated CommonWell Health Alliance and Kno2 as Qualified Health Information Networks (QHINs). This designation means that seven QHINs are now able to exchange health information electronically nationwide under the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement, a set of rules for securely exchanging treatment and other health information required by the 21st Century Cures Act of 2016.

This development is significant as it represents a major step forward in the interoperability of health information technology. With the ability for QHINs to exchange health information nationwide, patients, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders in the healthcare industry will greatly benefit from increased access to accurate and up-to-date health information.

The QHINs are expected to adopt Common Agreement Version 2.0 in the first quarter of 2024. This update will require support for the Health Level Seven FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standard, further enhancing the ability for QHINs to securely exchange health information in a standardized format.

Overall, this designation and the upcoming adoption of Common Agreement Version 2.0 represent important advancements in the field of health information technology. It signifies the commitment to improving interoperability and the secure exchange of health information, ultimately leading to better patient care and outcomes.
