Bolstering the Health Workforce in the Americas: A Joint Effort by PAHO and IADB”.

During a meeting in Washington D.C. on March 20, 2024, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) discussed potential areas of cooperation focused on enhancing human resources for health (HRH) in the Region of the Americas. The goal of the meeting was to share ideas based on the institutions’ priorities in this area and identify possibilities for collaboration.

Sebastian Bauhhoff, Principal Health Economist of the IADB Social Sector Unit, presented his organization’s main focuses and HRH projects related to training and competency, professional trajectories and workplace, recruitment, retention, and improving HRH productivity. He highlighted how these efforts are aimed at creating a strong health workforce that can handle emergencies and climate change impacts.

Benjamin Puertas, PAHO’s Unit Chief of Human Resources for Health, discussed PAHO’s key areas of work, including HRH information systems, HRH migration and mobility, interprofessional teams, transformation of health professionals’ education, and the strengthening and expansion of the roles of nurses. He emphasized how these efforts are critical to achieving resilient health systems across the region.

Both institutions expressed interest in establishing more concrete collaboration and engaging in detailed regional political dialogues to form alliances with countries aimed at bolstering the health workforce in the Americas. This meeting laid the foundation for future cooperation and partnerships to address HRH challenges in the region.
